NBA TV

I was tasked with creating a home for the NBA’s live linear TV network inside of the NBA App. NBA TV features exhibition, regular season and playoff game broadcasts, as well as NBA-related content including specials and documentaries. This was a major product launch for the company as it was a business objective to increase digital subscribers to NBA TV. In order to maximize impact and reach, the NBA TV ecosystem needed to be robust and cohesive, including a schedule, video-on-demand playlists, and a top notch live video experience.


NBA Draft

The NBA Draft is one of my favorite events on the NBA calendar. It’s a great chance to get nerdy about what each team needs and the potential strengths of young prospects. From a product perspective, there are tons of moving parts that need to be accounted for: a dynamic draft board, prospect page, and 30 individual team pages.

One of the toughest challenges I faced came about two weeks before the 2017 draft when State Farm was sold a sponsorship to the draft. The deal specified that they needed to own some major part of the digital product. Our design and product team scrambled for ideas when I came up with a solution: they could sponsor the “Draft Tracker”. The Draft Tracker was a sticky header component that keeps fans locked in on what’s going on during the draft as they explore the content throughout the app. State Farm was extremely pleased with the execution and signed on to sponsor the event for 2 more Drafts.


NBA Playoffs

The NBA Playoffs is the time of year when our products receive some of their heaviest traffic. Through user studies we learned that fans wanted a holistic view of what was happening in each series. A bracket view of the entire league tested very well. Creating a legible and user friendly bracket on devices ranging from older iPhones to large tablets was challenging, and it involved working closely with our developers to make sure that spacing and font sizes were consistent. One feature that I really pushed for was a championship screen. It was important to me that our app reflected the celebratory energy of the finals with a feature that would surprise and delight our users.
